Prince Harry received a royal surprise for a milestone birthday: public greetings from his family.

His brother, Prince William, and father, King Charles III, paid identical tributes to him on his 40th birthday on September 15, after three years of radio silence about him on social media due to a family rift.

A message on the royal family’s Instagram account read: “Wishing the Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!” Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton wrote on their Instagram Stories: “Wishing the Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday.”

It was their first birthday tribute to Prince Harry since 2021, when the family sent him their well wishes. Xformerly Twitter.

In their Instagram Stories post, Prince William and Middleton reshared the royal family’s Instagram post that included a July 2018 photo of Prince Harry smiling during a visit to DogPatch Labs, a coworking space for tech startups in Dublin, Ireland.

The photo was taken two months after the Duke and Meghan Markle married. Less than two years later, the pair announced their decision to step down as senior royals.

The couple’s exit from the monarchy in 2020 and their move to the United States caused a rift between Prince Harry and the royal family. Tensions have continued to rise over comments he and Markle have made about her relatives in the press and the release of her controversial 2023 memoir, Spare.

He blames the British tabloids and his family’s reluctance to join him in his legal battle against many of them over their coverage of him and his wife as a major reason for the family’s breakdown.

Despite tensions with the royal family, Harry and Meghan have occasionally returned to the UK for visits.

Last February, Prince Harry traveled to London to visit his father after the royal was diagnosed with cancer. Middleton revealed weeks later that she was also undergoing cancer treatment and announced earlier this month that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment.

In 2023, Prince Harry attended Charles’ coronation, though he sat apart from Prince William and did not join the family on a balcony at Buckingham Palace after the ceremony, choosing instead to travel to the airport. The year before, he and Markle were both present at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, just days after the duke’s 38th birthday.

Prince Harry recently shared his thoughts on his 40th birthday.

“I was anxious about turning 30, I’m excited about turning 40,” he told the BBC in a statement on September 13. “No matter how old I am, my mission is to continue to show up and do good in the world.”

The duke, who shares children Archie, five, and Lilibet, three, with Markle, added that he plans to spend his actual birthday with his family before heading off on a celebratory trip with friends.

“Becoming a father to two incredibly kind and funny children has given me a new perspective on life and allowed me to focus on all my work,” he added. “Being a father is one of the greatest joys in life and has made me even more motivated and determined to make this world a better place.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met with young children on the latest leg of their tour of Colombia. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Colegio La Giralda school in Bogota on the second day of their international trip.
