A Michigan State Police trooper died Friday from injuries sustained when his vehicle was struck by another car on I-75, pinning him under a tractor-trailer.

MSP officials confirm to 7 News Detroit that Officer Daniel Kerstetter was taken off life support after the decision was made regarding organ donation.

We are told that Officer Kerstetter’s organs will be donated, as he continues to serve others even after his death.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II said in a statement Sunday. “Traffic enforcement is a dangerous job. The dedication of our officers and traffic cops to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. By choosing to give the gift of life, even in death, MC Officer Kerstetter is serving others.”

According to Michigan State Police, the crash happened Friday on northbound I-75 near Dix in Lincoln Park around 8:40 a.m.

“I knew it wasn’t normal because everything else went quiet,” said Jim Bush, a neighbor who lives near I-75. “Everything else went quiet, all the cars stopped, there was no sound after that, so I thought something was wrong.”

“I heard a big bang… it scared me a little bit, I got up and everyone was running over there,” another neighbor said.

Police say the highway patrolman was inside his patrol vehicle and wearing his seat belt when it was struck. He was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated.

Police remind drivers of the move over law, which requires drivers to slow down at least 10 mph and move completely into an open lane when approaching a stopped vehicle with flashing, rotating or oscillating lights activated. If you are unable to move over due to traffic, weather or road conditions, slow down at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and pass with caution, giving the authorized vehicle as much room as possible.
