Reality TV star calls for voter registration amid ‘racism and hatred’ toward Haitian immigrants

Well done The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Star Garcelle Beauvais has called for the need for people to register to vote in this election, denouncing “hurtful and dangerous” discussions about the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio.

“I refuse to remain silent in the face of racism and hate,” she said in a video posted to social media Sunday. “Over the past week, the lies that have been spread about the Haitian community, about my community, have been disgusting, deeply hurtful, and dangerous.”

Beauvais, an actress of Haitian descent, moved to the United States at age 7 and wrote about her childhood in her memoir.Love Me As I Am: My Journey from Haiti to Hollywood to Happiness.

“We have to condemn this kind of hatred, this kind of racism, against anyone,” she said Sunday.

“I’ve always been a proud Haitian immigrant. Coming to America, working hard, that’s what we do,” she continued. “I come from gratitude. And I’m not going to sit back and let people talk about my community however they want for their own benefit.”

The reality TV star spoke in her native language in the video, calling on people to register and vote in this election.

“The power we have is to vote, to register and vote, and to stop this madness, this chaos,” Beauvais added. “We are supposed to support each other, from our leaders to our neighbors. This has to stop. (…) We can’t just sit back and do nothing. Register to vote. We have 50 days. Go vote. We have to stop this chaos.”

Video clips from a recent Springfield City Commission meeting have gone viral, showing residents denouncing the behavior of Haitian immigrants who have invaded their small town. Some residents claimed to have seen the immigrants eating animals in the city.

Former President Donald Trump amplified those allegations during the September presidential debate with his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“In Springfield, they eat the dogs,” Trump said. “The people that came, they eat the cats. They eat, they eat the pets of the people that live there.”

City officials have denied allegations of pet consumption in Springfield, but Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who grew up an hour away from the city, spoke out before joining the Republican presidential ticket about the plight of his Ohio constituents.

Over the past five years, an estimated 15,000 new Haitian immigrants have arrived in Springfield. Residents complain the influx is straining local governments and social service agencies and undermining security.

Viral memes about Trump protecting kittens and a TikTok dance trend of Trump’s debate comments spread across the internet after the debate.

Springfield schools have received numerous bomb threats, leading to evacuations and temporary closures. Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) held a press conference Monday and said there had been “at least 33” bomb threats, but they turned out to be hoaxes with “no validity whatsoever.” He said they were issued from overseas.

On Sunday, CNN’s Dana Bash attempted to pin the blame for the bomb threats on the Ohio city, due to the Trump campaign’s focus on the city.

“The idea that because a psychopath calls with bomb threats, we should somehow ignore the 40,000 Springfield residents whose lives are being made worse by Kamala Harris’ policies,” Vance told Bash.

“You accused me of causing a bomb threat. Doesn’t that mean I should keep my mouth shut about the people of Springfield? Don’t you realize that you are engaging in base propaganda to silence the concerns of the American people?” he shot back on CNN.
