Over a year ago, I read in the news that 23 Baltimore public schools reported that none of their students were proficient in math for their grade level. That was exactly 2,000 students who were not proficient. And it gets worse. In 20 other schools, only one or two students were on grade level in math. And not a single high school student in the entire city of Baltimore got a 4, the highest possible grade.

While this news may be old news, the reality is not. If you think this problem only affects certain types of Americans or certain neighborhoods, you are wrong. This is the future of America, and Baltimore is the worst of it. Schools across America are failing our children and sending functionally illiterate graduates to our cities.

The reason I’ve been thinking about Baltimore lately is that it shows how dysfunctional our society has become. Most of the news articles I’ve read have shown citizens blaming the city, local and state governments, and teachers. They’re right to do so. But shouldn’t they be blaming themselves instead?

What’s happening in America’s public schools? The decline in enrollment and chronic absenteeism are dramatic

I say this because all this blaming gets us nowhere. Government officials and educators simply don’t care. They see the problems right in front of them, but rarely do they take the necessary steps to fix them. It’s sometimes amazing how shameless they are when it comes to failing children. Too many of them hide behind the excuse that it’s white supremacy’s fault.

There are also those who blame politicians. They say, “If only you would stop voting Democrat!” There are a lot of failing schools in Republican strongholds. My point here is that politicians are not the solution to this problem. They are just politicians.

IF DEMOCRATS SAY THEY SUPPORT MY COMMUNITY, WHY ARE SO MANY OF THEM STILL FAILED TO LEARN TO READ?

But what I don’t see here is enough families taking responsibility for their children. There are parents who are outraged and who are questioning the system. But it’s not enough. Where are the boycotts? Where are the closures? Where are the protests around schools?

Some parents tell me they try to work within the system. I’ve seen them try – God bless them – but they get nowhere. They get tired or their child graduates and they give up, but the problem persists.

Why did so many Americans march for George Floyd and demand that Black Lives Matter be a movement, yet none of them care about producing nominal graduates in an already struggling America, where they will have to struggle to earn a living with both hands tied behind their backs? Why do we care so much more about racism than about the transformative power of education?

I can’t understand why education isn’t a priority today. Just a few weeks ago, the media was abuzz about Vice President Kamala Harris stealing former President Donald Trump’s idea to not tax waiter tips. Our house is literally burning down, and this is what we’re talking about?

All these failures of our leaders should serve as a lesson to our parents: they must fend for themselves. If they want their children to have a chance in life, they cannot entrust them to these so-called authorities. They must stop entrusting their most precious asset, their children, to people who do not care about them at all.

What happened in Baltimore proves the absolute failure of the education system that pays its employees hundreds of thousands of dollars. It also proves that too many parents have left the responsibility of raising their children to the state.

No matter if they have two or three jobs, take care of your children. No matter the excuses, take care of your children.

Frederick Douglass and many other slaves learned to read and count under the oppression of slavery. There were no sophisticated schools or technology. All it took was pure will and the desire to learn and achieve power through knowledge.

Parents must be parents and pass on the gift of learning to their children. Otherwise, they will be nothing more than a statistic.
