In June 2023, five passengers were killed aboard the Titan submersible, operated by OceanGate Inc. During an expedition to examine the wreck of the Titanic, the ship failed to resurface safely. After four days of searching, authorities revealed that the submarine had imploded. More than a year after the disaster, the Titan’s final message has been revealed.

Learn more about the Titan expedition, its final moments and more, below.

What happened to OceanGate’s Titan?

In June 2023, the Titan descended into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. One hour and 45 minutes into the voyage, the Titan’s mothership, the Polar Prince, lost contact with the ship. When the Titan failed to resurface, authorities were alerted and a search for the passengers began.

After four days of searching, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) discovered debris resembling the Titanic on the ocean floor. The debris was located about 500 meters from the Titanic.

Authorities later informed the public that the Titan’s pressure hull imploded as the ship sank. All five people on board died instantly, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and other officials.

In September 2024, Tym Catterson, a former OceanGate contractor, testified that there were “no red flags” regarding the submersible on the day it sank.

“Considering who was in the cab with Stockton at that moment — there are two billionaires with him — I can guarantee you that he’s trying to make sure that everything goes as smoothly and precisely as possible,” Patterson said, according to ABC News. “These were just theories that were being passed around by people who had absolutely no sleep and were very anxious. It’s the worst thing that could happen.”

Who were the passengers of the Titan?

The five passengers on board the Titan were Pakistani-British businessmen Shahzada Dawood, his 19 year old son, Suleman DawoodBritish businessman Hamish Hardingformer French Navy commander and submarine pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet and American submarine pilot and engineer Stockton Rush.

The Titan’s Final Message

In September 2024, the Titan’s final message was revealed. According to ABC News, the message was “All is well here,” and was received at 7,500 feet (2,274 meters). A photo of what remained of the OceanGate Titan was also released to the public.
