Rumors fuel anger against Sylacauga’s small Haitian community, officials say: ‘They just want to work’

Robbyn Duncan first started hearing the rumors in August.

Duncan, the agent for the new College Park housing development in Childersburg, has been the on-site agent for the community, which is taking shape with dozens of homes off U.S. 280.

The proposed floor plans include three- and four-bedroom homes, some with two stories and attached garages.

But another message was spreading around.

“A woman in the community said, ‘I heard illegal immigrants were coming to live here, off a plane,'” Duncan said.

“Another one said it was Section 8 housing. Another one said it was apartments. (People) were saying illegal immigrants were going to move here because there weren’t enough people to move here.”

The homes, however, are open to anyone who can afford one, whether they are first-time buyers, people looking to upgrade their property or others. Duncan said she has no idea where the stories come from.
