Netflix Documentary on Casey and Vicky White: Fugitives Arrested in Evansville

EVANSVILLE — Casey and Vicky White, the Alabama fugitive couple who made national headlines before their capture in Evansville in 2022, will be the subject of a Netflix documentary later this month.

“Jailbreak: Love on the Run” will premiere on the streaming service Wednesday, September 25. It will be the latest attempt to tell the story of Casey — a convicted felon serving a 75-year sentence in Alabama’s Lauderdale County Jail — and Vicky — the jailer who allegedly fell in love with him and helped him escape.

The trailer, released earlier this month, features interviews with law enforcement and several of White’s acquaintances, and follows how Vicky, a woman in her 50s, upends her life to go on the run with a suspected killer.

“It’s a disgusting romance novel, that’s what it is,” says one of the interviewees in the trailer.

The 90-minute documentary includes footage of the Whites’ dramatic capture just off U.S. 41 on May 9, 2022. As multiple law enforcement agencies scoured the country for any sign of them and 24-hour news channels were rife with theories, the couple holed up in Motel 41 for a week, eating pizza and planning their next move.

Federal authorities and those in Evansville and Vanderburgh County eventually tracked them to the motel after footage emerged of Casey standing in the bay of a South Side car wash next to a truck they had purchased in Tennessee for $6,000. Security camera footage showed him and Vicky driving off in their replacement car: a gray 2007 Cadillac they had bought in town using cash and fake names.

U.S. police officials said the truck was driven by Casey White, an escaped Alabama inmate. It was abandoned at Weinbach's Car Wash in Evansville, Indiana. And when the whites left their room and got into the car the afternoon of their capture, authorities followed them as they drove onto the highway.

Things quickly escalated into a short car chase that ended when the Whites drove onto a grassy area outside a nearby business and were struck by a police vehicle. Vicky White shot herself shortly after the collision, authorities said. She later died at Deaconess Hospital. She was 56.

At a news conference the next day, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said the couple was heavily armed and that White had told investigators he planned a “shootout” with authorities if he was not arrested.

Casey was extradited to Alabama and charged with first-degree prison escape and murder in connection with Vicky’s death. The latter charge was dropped after he agreed to a plea deal, and he was eventually sentenced to life in prison.

He was also due to stand trial for the alleged murder of Alabama woman Connie Ridgeway, but the case was stayed following his life sentence.

The story of the Whites, who were unrelated despite sharing a last name, has inspired many stories, and more are likely to follow. The Courier & Press and other local and national media outlets have covered it extensively, with C&P reporter Tom Langhorne writing a seven-part series on the case’s first anniversary last year.

On the less journalistic side of things, Lifetime also weighed in on the TV movie “Bad Romance: The Vicky White Story” in October 2023. “Reno 911!” star Wendi McLendon-Covey played Vicky, while Rossi Sutherland — son of legendary actor Donald Sutherland — took on Casey.

“Jailbreak: Love on the Run,” on the other hand, comes from production company The Cut, which has helped create other Netflix documentaries about true events, including the Boston Marathon bombing and the Waco disaster.

In addition to the interviews, the film includes security footage of the Whites inside the Lauderdale County Jail and body camera footage of Casey’s arrest. Most recently, an audio recording of intimate phone calls between the two men attempts to show the evolution of their relationship and how it ultimately ended in tragedy on the side of an Evansville road.
