Former RG Kar Hospital Director Sandip Ghosh’s medical registration cancelled

Former RG Kar Hospital Director Sandip Ghosh’s medical registration cancelled

The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) on Thursday cancelled the registration of former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh, an official said. Ghosh, who is in CBI custody in connection with the rape and murder case of a woman doctor at the hospital, was removed from the list of registered doctors maintained by the WBMC on September 19.

His license was cancelled under various provisions of the Bengal Medical Act, 1914, he said.

The CBI has arrested Ghosh and three of his alleged associates in the case. The ED case, filed under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), stems from the CBI FIR.

The irregularities came to light after the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor at the hospital on August 9, leading to massive protests in West Bengal and an ongoing standoff between doctors and the state government.

The ED, following raids on Ghosh’s premises, claimed that his wife had purchased two immovable properties without “proper approval” from the West Bengal government authorities.

Earlier this week, a Kolkata court extended the judicial custody of former superintendent of Ghosh and Tala police station Abhijit Mondal in the doctor rape and murder case by three days. Since Ghosh and Mondal were not cooperating with CBI officers, an extension in their custody was necessary, the CBI informed the court. The agency said its investigators were yet to obtain evidence of gang rape in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case. Ghosh was earlier arrested by the same agency on September 2 for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital. Three of his accomplices were also arrested by the central agency.

A civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the rape and murder case which is being investigated by the CBI on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
