University of Akron Opens New Nurse Anesthesia Surgical Simulation Room

AKRON, Ohio – Students pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice will now be able to hone their skills using the latest medical technology thanks to the University of Akron’s new Nurse Anesthesia Surgical Simulation Room.

The newly renovated room is located in Mary Gladwin Hall. The $200,000 project was funded by a $100,000 contribution from the University of Akron’s Women in Philanthropy organization and additional donations, according to the university.

The simulation room features modern walls, an operating room sink, additional outlets and a one-way mirror to allow instructors to observe simulations.

New technologies available to students include a GlideScope video laryngoscope, which will allow students to have a clearer view during patient intubation, improving accuracy and patient safety compared to traditional methods. The room is also equipped with an oil-free air compressor, which powers anesthesia machines more efficiently than the oxygen tanks that were previously required, according to the university.

Although the new simulation room is designed for the university’s nurse anesthesia program, it is available for use by other programs within the university, according to the university.

THE University of Akron Nurse Anesthesia Program The university has 53 clinical sites across the state and is nationally recognized for excellence. The university’s program has a 99 percent pass rate on the national certification exam for registered nurse anesthetists, which is higher than the national average pass rate of 83 percent, according to the university.
