The 10/3 scoreline tops our Carabao Cup betting odds

The 10/3 scoreline tops our Carabao Cup betting odds

Tottenham fans and players will be desperate to turn around their poor form as they begin their Carabao Cup campaign on Wednesday.

Coventry v Tottenham offers Spurs a chance to bounce back after a 1-0 defeat to rivals Arsenal at home last weekend, but Mark Robins’ Sky Blues will be hoping to make this another miserable outing for the big Angel’s side.

Coventry have had a mixed start to the season, winning just one game, but form rarely matters when it comes to cup football. Our tipster Shane O’Brien has looked at the markets to see where the value lies.

Under 2.5 goals

Spurs looked short of ideas in their north London derby defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, never really troubling the Arsenal goal despite having two-thirds of the ball.

Coventry will obviously not be as defensively solid as Arsenal, but Sunday’s north London derby was not an isolated incident for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Spurs have scored one goal or fewer in three of their four league games so far this season, only finding their advantage against an Everton side who have conceded 13 goals in their opening four league games.

Son Heung-Min is the only Spurs forward to have scored in their opening four league games, and Postecoglou is expected to rotate his attacking line.

Coventry, on the other hand, have scored one goal or fewer in six of their seven games this season.

They qualified for the third round of the League Cup with back-to-back 1-0 wins and there is a good chance Wednesday’s clash with Tottenham will be similarly unproductive.

Coventry were on a goal-scoring spree last season en route to the FA Cup semi-finals and came close to stunning Manchester United at Wembley. However, they only went into this game after United had suffered the worst of the worst. Their best chance of causing an upset on Wednesday night is to limit Spurs’ chances and score a goal at the other end.

Haji Wright scores

It was Haji Wright’s 95th-minute penalty that took last season’s FA Cup semi-final to extra time, while it was also Wright’s late winner that sealed a famous victory over Wolves in the quarter-finals.

Wright has scored just twice this season, both goals coming in Coventry’s 3-2 win over Oxford last month. As usual, he scored the winner in the 96th minute, giving Coventry their only league win of the season so far.

The American forward finished as Coventry’s top scorer last season and has established himself as an all-rounder against Premier League opponents. He is tempting to find the back of the net.

Draw

Spurs and Coventry have struggled equally to win games this season, with both teams recording just one league victory at this early stage.

Sure, Coventry have won two other League Cup games, but they have only faced Championship opposition. They will find it much harder to face an opponent of Spurs’ quality, even if Postecoglou rests his players.

Spurs come into this game on the back of back-to-back defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal and could use a victory to restore confidence ahead of what is already a must-win home game against Brentford this weekend.

However, confidence will be low after Sunday, and they will face tenacious opposition in a Coventry side keen to replicate their cup exploits of last season.

This could be subject to penalties.
