VIDEO: Canna Coffee owner under fire for reprimanding delivery man accused of new racist incident

A Washington DC coffee shop owner who was caught on camera making racist remarks to a delivery driver who didn’t speak English has been charged with using derogatory language in a separate incident in March.

According to the alleged victim, he and his wife went to Canna Coffee on Florida Avenue in Northwest to sell a stove to the store owner. When they arrived, the man said there was a disagreement over the price. That’s when the owner began berating him and his wife, calling them homophobic and using racial slurs.

A video provided to FOX 5 by the victim shows different angles of the argument. A video from inside the store appears to show men trying to push the oven out of the store while yelling at the clerk.

“You are holding me against my will,” said the salesman. “Please, I am afraid for my life.”

Another video given to FOX 5 shows the clerk trying to exit the store, repeating that he feels like he’s being held against his will.

In the latest video, the store owner is seen outside the store, holding a dog while talking on the phone with someone. He is heard saying that after giving the man money for the oven, he found out that the equipment was not in the condition he expected and that he wanted his money back.

It is unclear whether the vendor returned the money, but he and the store owner wait outside for the police to arrive. As they wait, the store owner can be heard hurling insults at the couple and continuing to insult them until the police arrive.

The man told FOX 5 he then hired a lawyer to receive payment for the oven, which allowed him to obtain video from inside the business. FOX 5 reached out to D.C. police to confirm details of the incident and provide the police report.

Canna Coffee came under fire Tuesday after a viral video posted to TikTok showed the store owner yelling and insulting Uber Eats delivery driver Gregorio Amundarain, a Latino driver, because he only spoke Spanish.

Amundarain, who moved to the United States from Venezuela to support his family, told FOX 5 he has never experienced such hostility when receiving an order.

“I feel sad,” he said, noting that he had hoped for a better life in America.

The video has now been viewed millions of times, and the store has received backlash from viewers, businesses and even the Washington government.

Uber announced it had removed Canna Coffee from its platform, saying: “We are absolutely disgusted by this behavior. Uber prides itself on helping people from all backgrounds find work in their communities, and hate has no place on our platform.”

And on Thursday, DoorDash told FOX 5 it had also removed the restaurant from its app.

“DoorDash has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination, and Canna Coffee has been removed from the DoorDash platform. We expect all members of our community to treat others with dignity and respect, and we never want to send anyone into an environment that could pose a threat to their safety and well-being,” they said in a statement.

GrubHub also responded to FOX 5’s request for comment, saying, “We are aware of the incident with another delivery service at Canna Coffee. Delivery partners should always be treated with respect, and we are conducting a full investigation and working to reach out to this merchant before taking further action.”

Washington DC police confirmed they were investigating the incident as a potential hate crime, although no arrests have been made. They said the investigation was ongoing.
