Getting ready for Oktoberfest | News, Sports, Jobs

Jeff Yorde and Kevin Gruhot peeled and chopped onions for bratwurst during Saturday’s Oktoberfest celebration in Marshall. The event kicks off at noon with live music, food and more at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.

MARSHALL — Oktoberfest celebrations are usually associated with beer and music. But volunteers also helped prepare Marshall’s Oktoberfest, including chopping up a whole bag of onions.

“Onions are for kids” “It’s a pleasure to welcome you to our facility,” Kevin Gruhot said as he and Jeff Yorde peeled and chopped vegetables Thursday afternoon. A sausage dinner, games and live music from local artists will be among the festivities Saturday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.

This will be the second year that local organizations and businesses have sponsored Marshall Oktoberfest. The event kicks off Saturday at noon in the 4-H building at the fairgrounds.

“We hope for many more people this year” Gruhot said. “Everyone is excited.”

The musical lineup will also feature a variety of styles, with the Larry Olsen Band kicking off the festivities, and singer/songwriter Kayla Daniels and Marshall duo The Singing Q’s performing later in the afternoon and evening.

Marshall Oktoberfest began last year with the help of the Marshall Knights of Columbus, who host the event.

“One of our Knights of Columbus suggested this idea to me a few years ago,” Gruhot said. “I thought, ‘Okay, let’s try it.’” The first edition of the event, last fall, drew a crowd of about 180 people. Gruhot said organizers hope participation will increase over time.

In addition to live music, Saturday’s celebration will feature a variety of beers from Brau Brothers and a food menu that includes sausage platters and sandwiches, with sides like German potato salad. A kids’ meal with a hot dog and fries will also be available, Gruhot said. Organizers will also sell Marshall’s Oktoberfest steins, with free refills, he said.

In addition to enjoying food, music and dancing, people can also relax and play yard games with their families. Gruhot said games like Yardzee, giant Jenga and bean bags will be available this year.

Marshall Oktoberfest will be held from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $10. More information is available online at the event’s Facebook page, “Oktoberfest ’24 from Marshall, MN. »
