‘Marseille are good but we’re ready’ – Maxence Caqueret rejects Lyon’s ‘underdog’ status

The first Shock of the Olympics of the 2024/25 season takes place on Sunday evening with Olympique de Marseille making the trip north to face their archrivals Olympique Lyonnais at the Groupama Stadium.

Marseille will arrive in Lyon in good form. Roberto De Zerbi’s squad have yet to be beaten in a competitive game having only dropped points in a home draw to Stade de Reims. Despite it being an early stage in the campaign, there are whispers that Marseille could be forming a title challenge.

Lyon have started the season slowly, defeats to Stade Rennais and AS Monaco preceded a comeback victory over RC Strasbourg Alsace, and a draw last weekend to RC Lens meant that momentum has been hard to come by for Pierre Sage’s squad.

Maxence Caqueret – ‘We have to compete with Marseille this season’

A victory over Marseille would significantly help The Gones kickstart their season. As Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret (24) explained during this afternoon’s press conference, “Marseille are making a bigger impression, they have won more matches, and they’re near the top of the table, but we have a team to compete with them this season.”

We’ve prepared well and we’re ready to play a great match, as it could determine the rest of our season. The stadium will be hot. We want to win, Marseille as well. We’re not underdogs. Marseille are a good team but we’re ready. We’re going to give it everything,” Caqueret stated.
