Jim Caviezel Returns for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection

After years of discussions and development, the sequel to The Passion of Christ Filming for the movie is expected to begin in 2025. According to Italian news agency Italpress, director Mel Gibson is currently in Malta with a production team to scout potential filming locations for The Passion of Christ: The Resurrectionin which Jim Caviezel will return to play Jesus.

Other filming locations are planned, including Israel and Morocco. Francesco De Vito, who played Peter in the original film, is also expected to return alongside Caviezel.

The Passion of Christ, released in 2004, grossed over $600 million at the box office and received three Oscar nominations. Gibson has since expressed interest in continuing the story. The script reportedly went through several drafts and revisions by Randall Wallace, a screenwriter who worked with Gibson on the original film and earned an Oscar nomination for Brave heartIn April, Wallace confirmed that the script had finally been completed.

In a 2022 interview, Gibson described the sequel film as a non-linear narrative set “in the past and other realms, and it has a little bit of a science fiction feel to it.” This led to speculation that The Passion of Christ: The Resurrection could potentially include a depiction of Jesus’ time in Hell as depicted in the Catholic faith.
