Mississippi teen murder suspect caught on camera in chilling footage after allegedly killing his mother

A chilling video has shown the nonchalant demeanor of a Mississippi teenage murder suspect after she allegedly shot and killed her mother, with the girl seen texting after the act.

Kitchen surveillance footage played at the murder trial of Carly Gregg, now 15, captured the moments before and after the alleged killing of her mother, Ashley Smylie, on March 19. Gregg was 14 when she allegedly used a .357 Magnum pistol to kill Smylie.

The harrowing footage shows Gregg hiding something behind his back and walking towards his bedroom moments before the sound of three gunshots rings out.

The footage shows Carly Gregg moments after she allegedly opened fire and killed her mother in March.

After the alleged murder, Gregg is seen calmly walking back into the family kitchen and sitting on a stool. The family’s two Labradors were seen following her into the kitchen after the shooting.

At his trial, prosecutors said Gregg texted his stepfather, Heath Smylie, after the killing in an attempt to lure him to his home and ambush him.

When Heath Smylie testified Tuesday, he said that when he opened the kitchen door, “the gunshot went off in my face before the door was even open three or four inches, and it all happened pretty quickly from there.”

“The gun flashed in my face,” he said. “There were two more shots, but I had my hand on the gun after the first shot and I turned it away from Carly.” Heath was shot in the shoulder during the encounter with Gregg, police said.

At her first court appearance, Carly Gregg pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her bail was set at $1 million.

In her opening statement Monday, Rankin County Assistant District Attorney Kathryn White Newman said Ashley Smylie, a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School where her daughter was a student, had learned from a friend of Gregg’s earlier in the day that she smoked marijuana and had disposable phones, WLBT reported, and when they returned home, she found vape pens in her daughter’s bedroom.

Gregg was charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.

According to the Clarion Ledger, she rejected a 40-year prison sentence, with her defense team arguing insanity.
