Bolt announces plans to appeal identity theft ruling

Bolt has decided to appeal the decision of the Adentan Circuit Court, which ordered him to pay GH₵1.9 million in compensation to a passenger.

Passenger Judge Noah Adade took the company to court after discovering that a driver was using his personal data and identity on the app without his explicit consent.

The court, presided over by His Worship Sedinam Awo Kwadam, found that Bolt had breached its duty of care to the passenger and that the company had breached several provisions of the Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843).

In response to the court’s decision in a press release issued on Friday, September 20, 2024, Bolt noted that while he acknowledges the decision, he believes an appeal will provide a more accurate result.

Bolt further clarified that the identity theft involving the driver did not occur within Bolt’s ecosystem or due to a breach of the Bolt app or its systems.

Bolt said it is committed to protecting the privacy and security of passengers and the personal data of drivers.

She noted that as her lawyers begin the appeal process, she remains committed to cooperating with relevant stakeholders and regulatory authorities to improve the safety and security of the platform in Ghana.
