NHL Legend Jaromir Jagr, 52, Announces Intention to Retire From Professional Hockey

Jaromir Jagr, 52, is set to retire from professional hockey for good.

The former Pittsburgh Penguins star now plays at home in the Czech Republic for the Kladno Knights, which he also owns.

And after writing on his Instagram page earlier this week that this would be his “final season,” Jagr confirmed to The Athletic that that was the case.

Jagr last played in the NHL during the 2017-18 season, appearing in 22 games for the Calgary Flames.

He spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Penguins before making stops with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals and more.

He returned to Pittsburgh in February when the Penguins retired his jersey number (68).

Jagr is a five-time winner of the Hart Award, given to the player who leads the league in points at the end of the season and has the second-most points in NHL history.

On Wednesday, Jagr opened his 37th professional season.

The 52-year-old was the source of a power-play goal, the only one scored by Kladno in a 5-1 away defeat to Pardubice.

It was Jagr’s first season opener since the Flames released him.

He played in Pardubice despite not being fully fit due to a muscle injury that forced him to interrupt pre-season training for four weeks.

Jagr said he needs more games to get back to his best.

“It’s good, it was the first match,” he told local media.
