On Friday, September 20, the Oscar winner performed a few songs with his band Modern West at the star-studded One805Live! benefit concert at his Carpinteria, California, home, where he introduced one song in particular with a powerful message of encouragement.

“The person on our right, you know, the one who helps us get through it all, your sweetheart, your wife, your girlfriend, whatever it is,” Costner said. “But sometimes, you know, we see everything and we just forget to say one thing: You matter.”

Costner encouraged his audience to “let them know that,” before adding that “in life, sometimes it’s just a little thing.”

“What’s so hard about saying, ‘You’re important, you’ve been important for a long time,'” he said. “Sometimes you have to search and that’s what this song is about.”

The charity event also featured performances by Pink, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx and others — with additional attendees including Prince Harry, Cameron Diaz and husband Benji Madden, Zoe Saldaña, Jeff Bridges, Rob Lowe and Sheryl Lowe.

Modern West’s set also included a performance of the song “Chasing the Wind” as well as a cover of the Turtles’ 1967 classic “Happy Together.”

The show raised money for local fire, police and sheriff departments, with proceeds going toward purchasing mental health equipment and resources.

Costner has also not been shy about giving life lessons to his 17-year-old son, Cayden, lately. Earlier this month, the Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 the star spoke with Authentic Hollywood about creating the film with his son, which he described as “a perfect experience.”

“He saw me working on this movie. He’s always known that I talked about it,” Costner, a father of seven, said of Cayden. “And then he saw me take that opportunity, that hope, and go out and make two movies. He got to see it all come to fruition.”

“It’s weird to see your dad show a movie and see people stand up and applaud,” he added. “I think maybe he realized that he shouldn’t give up on a dream and that he had to keep moving forward.”

Costner shares Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14, with his estranged wife, designer Christine Baumgartner. He is also dad to Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36, whom he shares with ex-wife Cindy Silva, as well as son Liam, 26, whom he shares with ex-partner Bridget Rooney.
