Akash Deep topples Zakir, Mominul’s posts

Wickets fell left, right and centre on the second day of the first Test in Chennai, the most wickets to fall in a day at the venue, as Jasprit Bumrah’s four wickets led a collective bowling performance from India with Bangladesh folding for 149 in reply to India’s 376.

Ravichandran Ashwin scored his sixth Test century to help India post a significant total after slipping to an alarming 96 for 4. Ashwin (102*) and Ravindra Jadeja (86*) forged a record seventh-wicket partnership, steering India into the ascendancy after being under the thumb in the first two sessions.

Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s half-century, India were struggling at 144/6, largely due to the penetrating bowling of Hasan Mahmud. Ashwin and Jadeja joined forces to launch a fine counter-attack, scoring 195 in just 227 balls to guide India to 339/6 at Stumps on the opening day.

India scored just 88 runs and lost three wickets in each of the first two sessions, but Ashwin and Jadeja mastered the conditions brilliantly, picking up 20 fours and four sixes between them to help the hosts post 163 runs in the final session at a rate of more than five per over. Bangladesh were sloppy with their overrate, managing to bowl just 23 and 25 overs in the morning and afternoon sessions respectively, and could bowl just 32 in the final session of Day 1, even though the extra 30 minutes were used.
