At least four dead, dozens injured after shooting in Birmingham, Alabama’s Five Points South neighborhood

At least four people are dead and dozens more injured after a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night (local time).

The incident occurred along Magnolia Avenue in the city’s Five Points South neighborhood, known as a center for nightlife, dining and entertainment.

Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald confirmed to reporters that police arrived and found three people unconscious on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds, who were later pronounced dead.

He also said another victim died in hospital, while dozens of others were injured, including at least four with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting appears to have occurred on the street or a sidewalk, and multiple law enforcement agencies are now assisting local police with their investigation.

Mr Fitzgerald said there was currently no one in custody and appealed for the public to come forward if they had any information about the incident.

“We believe multiple shooters fired multiple shots at a group of people in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue,” Fitzgerald said at a news conference.

“There is no one in custody and we cannot stress enough to the public how important it is for us to have information in this investigation.

“Rest assured that we will do everything in our power to discover, identify and track down the perpetrators of the attacks against our people.”

Images from the scene show a large area cordoned off by yellow police tape with several police vehicles on scene as well as fire trucks.

Locals can be seen standing on the edges of where the hotspot is located, with various shops and restaurants visible nearby.
