Discover the best American insurance companies in 2025

As extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years, the need for a reliable insurer has become paramount. For example: In 2023, Illinois residents were plagued by record-breaking storms, floods, and property damage, prompting FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) to declare several disasters in the state that year. But Illinois residents with insurance policies through Financial Country— a Bloomington-based insurance company — were in good hands.

Jesse Kohlbecker, the company’s vice president of claims and customer service, says that in 2023, even during the “three largest losses in our nearly 100-year history,” the insurer took care of its customers. “Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our colleagues, we were able to successfully navigate a historic claims year and continue to deliver exceptional service experiences.”

This dedication has undoubtedly helped Country Financial earn top rankings in homeowners insurance, renters insurance, permanent life insurance and term life insurance on our fourth annual list. The Best American Insurance Companies.

To create the rankings, Forbes and market research firm Statista surveyed more than 18,000 people in the United States who said they had insurance in at least one of five categories: homeowners, renters, auto, permanent life, or term life. Respondents were asked how satisfied they were with their insurance company and whether they would recommend it to others. Participants also rated their insurance providers on criteria such as agent advice, customer service, cost, company transparency, digital services, and claims service. The ratings for each insurance category were combined into a score, and the companies with the highest scores were ranked. (The length of the lists varies for each type of insurance, as each list depends on the number of reviews collected, the final score, and the size of that insurance market.)

A total of 97 companies were recognized in at least one of the five insurance categories on this year’s list.

FriendshipLincoln, Rhode Island-based Amica Corp. earned high marks in all five insurance categories. Ted Shallcross, Amica’s president and CEO, credits employees for the success. “The secret to our long-term success and industry-leading customer retention is our employees,” he said. “They provide personalized, empathetic service based on the specific needs of the policyholder they are helping.”

Employees also recognize that because Amica is a mutual, customers have a vested interest in the company. “We belong to our policyholders and we make our decisions with their interests in mind.”

Only six other insurers, besides Amica, fall into all five insurance categories: American Family Insurance, Auto owner insurance, Erie Insurance, National Mutual Insurance Company, State FarmAnd United States of AmericaMost of the companies on our list fall into one or two types of insurance.

According to PwC’s new report, Insurance 2025 and Beyond, the best insurers are not only preventing and protecting their clients from risks. They are also focusing on mitigating the risks that climate change poses to the world. The report notes: “Because of their inherent expertise in risk management, insurers and reinsurers have a clear opportunity and societal obligation to lead in addressing the global climate crisis.” They can do this, the report suggests, in a number of ways, including advising their clients to invest in more resilient infrastructure and supply chains, and developing public-private partnerships in which insurers and regulators develop catastrophe risk models and collaborate on data collection and research on climate change adaptation.

Of course, many insurers are also setting themselves apart by embracing technological advancements that improve their operations and customer experience. But at Aflac, which categorizes itself in both permanent and term life, even with the company’s evolving digital offerings and increasingly powerful AI tools, the insurer “never forgets that we are a people company,” says Virgil R. Miller, president of Aflac US. “Our agents and claims staff at the corporate office are trained to provide compassionate care to policyholders who are often going through some of the most challenging times of their lives.”
