Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has kept a low profile since retiring after the 2010 season, but on Tuesday he revealed some sad news about his health.

In a congressional hearing, he said he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative neurological condition that causes tremors and balance problems, among other serious symptoms.

Favre took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to thank his fans for their love and support.

The hearing Favre attended concerned his involvement as an investor in Prevacus, a company that makes a concussion drug.

According to ESPN, Favre once admitted to suffering hundreds, if not thousands, of concussions during his 20-year NFL career, and a recent study found that each concussion significantly increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

It is a disease that affected heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, as well as actor Michael J. Fox.

Favre was considered one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in the 1990s, and he helped restore the Green Bay Packers, who struggled through much of the 1970s and 1980s, to powerhouse status by joining them in 1992.

He led them to the Super Bowl championship in the 1996 season and came relatively close to another the following season.
