The demand of some leaders of the Panchamasali Reservation Agitation Committee that the state government take a decision in three days on reclassification of the Panchamasali Lingayat community in the Other Backward Classes 2A group is unfair, Minister Satish Jarkiholi said in Athani recently.

“Some leaders have warned that unrest could break out if their demand is not met within three days. This is unfair,” he added.

“Inclusion of Panchamasalis in Section 2A is a serious policy decision which can have several ramifications. It has to be taken within the framework of the law. It will be taken in accordance with the due process. It cannot be rushed,” he said.

He appealed to the committee leaders to understand that no political gathering or agitation can lead to reservation benefits.

“We have seen this many times before. Such benefits are given only after constitutional bodies like the Backward Classes Commission conduct studies and submit reports to the government. The relevant parliament should pass laws implementing these reports,” he said.

Replying to a question, he said BJP MP and Panchamasali leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal should think about why his party government was not able to meet the demand, before pointing fingers at the Congress. “What were his party ministers and fellow legislators doing during that time? Why are they talking about protests against the government during the winter session now? He should think about these things first,” Mr. Jarkiholi said.

Responding to the demand of Prophet Mantralayam Math to free Hindu temples from government control, the minister said all temples are independent agencies.

“Most temples, especially the larger ones, are run by local committees and elected bodies. Some are managed by foundations. Only a few are directly administered by the government,” he said.

He refused to speak on the TTD prasadam adulteration controversy, saying, “What can we say about it sitting in Athani and Gokak?” He said the law would take its own course in the matter.

He denied reports that people were flying Palestinian flags in some cities, calling them attempts at treason. “Legal action can be taken if the flag of our enemy country is displayed,” he said.

“We have to understand that not all Muslim countries are against India. Some Muslim countries have friendly relations with India. All of them should not be seen in the same light. Of course, the police should take action against the offenders who indulge in anti-national activities,” he said.

Replying to a question, he said there was neither discontent nor lack of coordination among Congress leaders in the party’s district unit.
