Maryland Fugitive Wanted for Carjacking, Dog Kidnapping

EAST HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police are searching for a Maryland man accused of carjacking a vehicle with a dog inside and fleeing the scene.

Kenneth Crider, of Poolesville, Maryland, is wanted on charges of robbery, armed robbery and receiving stolen property in connection with the incident Monday outside a Tractor Supply store in East Huntingdon Township. Authorities said the victim was approaching the store when Crider allegedly grabbed the keys to the victim’s truck and drove away.

The victim’s dog, named Lucky, was inside the vehicle at the time of the theft. Crider was last seen fleeing the area in the stolen truck toward Highway 819.

Police obtained surveillance footage from a nearby Walmart in Connellsville, recorded less than an hour after the carjacking. According to police, the video shows Crider arriving in the stolen vehicle, briefly letting the dog out of the truck before fleeing.

State troopers are continuing their search for Crider and the stolen vehicle, a 2016 Ford Focus, in connection with the incident.

  • Wheaton man identified after fatal officer-involved shooting

    WHEATON, Md. — The Maryland attorney general’s office has identified the man shot and killed by a Montgomery County police officer on Sept. 21 as Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz, 31, a Wheaton resident.

    According to an update from the attorney general’s office, Corporal Cody Hobbs, a 12-year veteran assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau, was the officer involved in the shooting. Police responded to a report of an assault in progress around 8 p.m. in the 3400 block of Janet Road.

    Upon arrival, officers found Chavez-Paz in a yard holding an “object” in his right hand. After giving several commands to “drop the knife,” he allegedly began to cross the street, prompting Hobbs to discharge his weapon, fatally wounding Chavez-Paz.

    An investigation revealed the presence of a grilling fork near Chavez-Paz at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident, which is being investigated by the Independent Investigations Division.
