The Hayes House in Dallas is a Mid-Century Modern Gem

The Hayes House in Dallas is a Mid-Century Modern Gem

If you were to leaf through the September 1957 issue of City and countrysideDallas’ Hayes House would be a landmark. And today, if you were to drive past this iconic mid-century home, it wouldn’t look much different.

Named for car dealer Earl Hayes, who opened the city’s first Chevrolet dealership, the Hayes House was built by architects Harold Prinz and LeVere Brooks and draws inspiration from the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, particularly his affinity for creating spaces with a relaxed interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces. Built on a solid stone foundation in the middle of a 115-year-old nature sanctuary, the home has had only two owners in its 68 years, making it a rare opportunity to own a piece of Dallas architectural history.

Advertised as a “contemporary” home when it was built, this stunning low-rise home is now a relatively intact time capsule that has been put on the market for $4 million. Eugene Gonzalez of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International holds the listing.

The 6,416-square-foot home, set on 2.1 acres overlooking Kidd Springs Creek, features four bedrooms and eight bathrooms, as well as multiple wine cellars and three wet bars. The single-story home is bordered by a large lawn with tiered gardens accented with stone and mature trees. Once inside, you’re greeted by open, flowing spaces lined with floor-to-ceiling windows or sliding glass doors.

In true mid-century modern style, the main living room features extensive walnut and birch paneling and exposed brick. Another living room, one of three in total, features brick floors, custom cabinetry, and a built-in fireplace. Most of the rooms can be separated from each other by sliding doors, a popular mid-century modern design element that allows for greater privacy. There are also iron screens that hide the glass walls for added privacy as you move through the home.

Off the main living area is a formal dining room with sliding glass doors that connect to the backyard, as well as travertine floors and original built-ins for linen and dish storage. The eat-in kitchen feels almost ripped from the 1950s, if not for the jazzy tiled backsplash and modern stainless steel appliances.

An entire wing, with a cantilevered roof, is dedicated to the master suite. Here, you’ll find a spacious bedroom that features more built-ins and original woodwork. Sliding glass doors open to a private terrace, perfect for enjoying morning coffee before having to see or interact with the rest of the household, while the bathroom is delightfully period-inspired with plenty of counter space and a vanity with a pull-down makeup mirror.

Other highlights of the property include a home office, a wraparound deck, plenty of green space and a covered patio next to a massive pool with a swim-up bar. Beyond the pool, the creek is accessible via a footbridge. There is also a basement and a three-car carport, as well as a three-car garage.
