Hurricane Helene Cancellation Updates: Latest on MLB, College Football and Other Games Affected by Storm

Hurricane season runs from early June to late November. Typically, teams in the Southeast are prepared for any weather eventuality and their governing leagues find ways to prepare for it. Whether the solution is rescheduling games or forcing teams to play on neutral sites, there is usually a way to schedule games.

MLB and the NCAA are closely monitoring Hurricane Helene. The storm is following a unique path and appears to make landfall in the United States in western Florida, continue north through western Georgia and eastern Alabama, and then head west toward Tennessee and Kentucky by Friday night and Saturday morning.

Helene was upgraded to a hurricane on Wednesday. It is expected to strengthen quickly and become a Category 3 by landfall. The Sporting News will provide the latest updates on sports and teams affected by the storm, as well as the latest Hurricane Helene tracker.

MLB

Mets vs Braves

MLB has yet to officially decide on a major National League East series between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. Both teams are in the race for the National League Wild Card, and rain is forecast for Atlanta throughout Wednesday night and Thursday.

The league may have its hands tied, as both teams have a separate weekend series to finish the regular season. These playoff-hopeful teams could play a very important doubleheader on Monday, September 30, with the Wild Card Series starting the following day, Tuesday.

If the rain persists through the weekend, it could impact Atlanta’s series against the Kansas City Royals, who are themselves in the playoff race in the American League Wild Card.

College Football

The game between Florida A&M and Alabama A&M has been postponed until November 29.
