Kolkata doctor rape case: A designated CBI court denied bail to Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as the CBI made serious allegations which could lead to the punishment of dead.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S Dey highlighted the seriousness of the allegations against Sandip Ghosh. The magistrate noted that if convicted, Ghosh could potentially face the death penalty, a punishment usually reserved for the most extraordinary cases.

CBI allegations against Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal

Sandip Ghosh, along with former Tala police station officer Abhijit Mondal, was arrested by the CBI for allegedly tampering with evidence and delaying filing of an FIR in the gruesome case which took place on 9 august.

Additional Judicial Magistrate S Dey pointed out that the ongoing investigation is serious and complex as both Ghosh and Mondal seek to challenge the charges against them.

The CBI has alleged that some files related to the rape and murder case of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital were “falsely created” and “altered” at Tala police station in Kolkata . These allegations implicate Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, leading the agency to seize the station’s CCTV footage for forensic examination.

The CBI which questioned Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mondal and former medical college principal Sandip Ghosh in its custody informed the court that “new/additional” facts have come to light in during his investigation, showing that “certain false files relating to the present case were created/modified in PS Tala”.

Ghosh and Mondal were produced in court after completing their remand period.

Sanjay Roy, one of the main suspects, was arrested on August 10, just a day after the gruesome crime. The CBI alleged that there was a significant delay in seizing vital evidence, including Roy’s clothes, which could have been critical to the investigation.
