Mel Gibson admits he struggled to make ‘Lethal Weapon 5’

At this point, Mel Gibson is trolling us.

He initially said he was going to direct and star in “Lethal Weapon 5.” Then last week he mentioned that he hadn’t yet decided whether “Lethal Weapon 5” or “Passion of the Christ 2” would be his next film.

This afternoon, in his first-ever appearance at the convention, Gibson told FanX attendees that he’s sitting on a “Lethal Weapon 5” script and struggling to make it happen.

“The fifth one is written,” Gibson said. “It’s interesting. This has been delayed for one reason or another. There are always problems with these things. It just won’t happen for one reason or another. I can’t even explain why.

It’s not hard to read between the lines here. Gibson is a very controversial figure. His downfall began when he lost his sobriety and suffered from the dark depths of alcoholism (approximately between 2005 and 2011). During that time, he sexually harassed a police officer, shouted racist slurs, blamed Jews for various wars, and was filmed insulting and harassing his girlfriend.

Five years later, Gibson successfully made his return to Hollywood by directing 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Then #MeToo happened in 2017, society changed, and Gibson became a pariah again.

Gibson now plays primarily in C-list fare. If you can believe it, he hasn’t starred in a hit film since 2002’s “Signs,” and no film has done well at the box office since 2010’s “Edge of Darkness” (he reported 80 million dollars). The good news is that he’s independently financing and will be shooting “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection” maybe next year and he directed “Flight Risk,” starring Mark Wahlberg, which is out now. scheduled for January 2025.

With all of this in mind, why would Warner Bros. allow a sequel to “Lethal Weapon” to be made? It doesn’t help that Gibson is now 68 and his co-star, Danny Glover, is 78.
