How to get Microsoft’s Windows 11 2024 Update (and be ready for new Copilot+ features)

Windows 11 2024 (aka 24H2) is one of Microsoft’s most confusing updates because it contains AI features for the new Copilot+ PCs that won’t be available on other machines. This wasn’t helped by confusing communication from Redmond that didn’t make it clear who would receive what updates and when. Microsoft announced in a press release that Windows 11 2024 will be rolling out starting today. So here is how this process will work.

The update will be a complete swap of the operating system (OS) with new “foundational elements” that will effectively pave the way for new Copilot+ AI features arriving later. It will be available on all PCs equipped with Windows 11 and not just on Copilot+ PC owners. It will be not contain Copilot+ AI features to begin with – just as Apple’s latest iPhones and iOS 18 didn’t have its vaunted Apple Intelligence to begin with.

Improvements for all users on 24H2 include an updated taskbar, new 80Gbps USB speeds, RUST support, and BitLocker encryption by default. If you have the latest AMD 9000 series processors, a patch will improve gaming performance by 3-13% (if you don’t already have it). You’ll also get an improved battery saver, Bluetooth LE audio, HDR backgrounds, and Wi-Fi 7 support.

If you have Windows 11, you are eligible for the 2024 update because the system requirements have not changed. However, some users will get it sooner than others. The first phase of the rollout will be for eligible devices running Windows 11, versions 22H2 and 23H2, so make sure you have them. You’ll also want to configure your computer to receive updates quickly and automatically, so go to Settings > Windows Update and enable “Get the latest updates as soon as they become available.”

Otherwise, the timing of the update is a bit out of your control. After the first phase, Microsoft will make the 24H2 update available to “existing devices in the market based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, and other factors that impact the update experience.” day,” the company wrote. Microsoft will at least notify you via the Windows Update Settings page when it is available for your device.

No one will benefit from Copilot+’s key features at first (like Reminder, Click to Do, and Enhanced Windows Search). Windows Insiders equipped with PC Copilot+ will be the first to receive them, starting in October. This will be followed by a gradual rollout to select devices and markets starting in November. Once again, you will (never) be eligible for these features unless you have a Copilot+ PC. To learn more about these features, see our dedicated article.
