For the second time since Sunday evening, a home on Speed Street was the target of a barrage of bullets Tuesday afternoon.

Residents of the nearby Fostoria neighborhood said Tuesday’s shooting included “eight to 12 pops” that appeared to come from a handgun and were clearly aimed at the home at 1107 Speed Street.

Sunday evening, shortly before 10 p.m., several residents called to report a dozen gunshots in the same location. On Tuesday, residents said Sunday’s gunshots appeared to come from both handguns and shotguns.

Less than an hour after the initial incident on Sunday, Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) officers were on the scene of another shooting nearby in Marcus Bottom, where residents reported three more shootings. fire.

Tuesday afternoon, VPD Sgt. Jerrold Hayes said one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries following Tuesday’s incident and was treated at Merit Health River Area. Hayes said VPD could not confirm that the home at 11:07 a.m. was the target of either shooting, nor could it confirm that any of the three shootings were related.

“We are dealing with these three separate incidents,” Hayes said. “We set up a mobile camera (following Tuesday’s incident) in the 1100 block of Speed Street to monitor the area.”

Vicksburg Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield visited the area after Tuesday’s shooting to speak with residents in his district and told the Post they have a right to be concerned about the violence underway in their neighborhood.

“I’m disappointed and frustrated that this is happening in this community,” Mayfield said. “There is no place for violence and shootings. What we don’t want is for innocent people to get hurt. More than anything, we want the community to feel safe and not be afraid to go out.

Mayfield said he will be on hand Wednesday evening for a scheduled meeting of the Fostoria Neighborhood Association to be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Oak Hall Bed and Breakfast on Drummond Street. Members of the Fostoria Neighborhood Association said that although the event was an official meeting of the group, invitations were extended to residents of Glenwood Circle, Marcus Bottom and other areas affected by the recent string of shootings.

Hayes said anyone with information regarding any of the shootings is asked to contact VPD at 601-636-2511. Calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (601-355-8477). All calls are confidential.
