Former Penn State students convicted in Piazza’s 2017 hazing death

EYWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle A. Henry announced that two former Penn State University students have been sentenced for their roles in a 2017 hazing incident.

According to Henry, Brendan Young, 28, and Daniel Casey, 27, both pleaded guilty in July to 14 counts of hazing and a single count of inadvertent endangerment in the Timothy Piazza hazing case .

The release said Young and Casey were leaders of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at the time they participated in and facilitated the 2017 hazing incident that left Piazza unresponsive the next morning, consuming large amounts of alcohol, said Henry.

Authorities say Piazza died a few days later from multiple falls resulting from his intoxication.

“Nothing can undo the harm Tim suffered seven years ago, nothing can bring Tim back to his family and friends. With the sentences handed down today, the criminal proceedings have come to a conclusion,” said Attorney General Henry.

The Piazza family has since passed the Timothy Piazza Anti-Hazing Act through the Pennsylvania Legislature, which includes a misdemeanor upgraded to a felony in the event of serious injury or death, officials note.

Casey and Young were sentenced to two to four months in prison (with the possibility of work release), followed by three years of probation, plus community service, as stated in the release.
