How social media helps people form friendships and combat loneliness

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — America’s surgeon general warns people about the dangers of loneliness.

He says one in two adults feel isolated and it’s a national epidemic that affects people from all walks of life.

Francis Torres Garcia is originally from Tijuana. She moved to Clovis from Chicago several years ago and, before that, lived in San Diego.

Adjusting to the Central Valley after living in a big city was a challenge. The feeling of loneliness quickly set in.

“You really have to work on it and be aware of it,” Francis said. “Look for the tools. Find the tools that won’t lead you into that hole.”

Francis used Meet Up to expand her social circle in each city she moved to.

According to Meet Up’s website, its mission is to help people make connections. Francis uses it to teach yoga and find other people who share his interests.

“It’s just something that connects you to yourself, to people and to love,” Francis said. “That’s why I choose yoga every time.”

Bumble for Friends is another social media app designed for making new friendships.

“It’s a little more tailored to the type of friendships you’re looking for,” said Lucille McCart, friendship expert at Bumble For Friends. “Then you could add that you’re new in town and what your friendship goals are.”

McCart tells Action News that even though we are out of the pandemic, our social lives are not yet back to normal.

“I think that’s a big part of why we’re seeing all these comments right now about loneliness among young people and feeling disconnected and not having enough time,” McCart said.

McCart says apps like Bumble For Friends help people combat feelings of loneliness.

“In the Fresno area, we find that the majority of people say that making friends online can alleviate their feelings of loneliness,” McCart said.

Francis and McCart say it’s worth trying online platforms like MeetUp or Bumble for Friends, even if it seems awkward or strange.
