Nonprofit announces nominations for prestigious award given to Arizona nurses

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Some may have heard this saying — not all angels have wings; some have scrubs.

That’s why March of Dimes, a nonprofit that helps mothers and babies, holds its Heroes in Action award to honor and recognize nurses and maternal and infant health providers.

The three finalists in four different categories were announced on Thursday. Nurses and health staff who are up for the distinguished award are nominated by patients or fellow staff members.

Here are the finalists in their respective categories:

Diversity and Advocacy Excellence

  • Gia Farris, Phoenix Children’s Hospital
  • Mandi Burridge, Hushabye Nursery
  • Sandra Baca, Equality Health

Excellence in Perinatal & Mental Health

  • Dr. Sharon Thompson, Central Phoenix Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Michelle Lacy, Women’s Health Innovations of Arizona
  • Chris Gordon, Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Neonatal & Pediatric Nursing Excellence

  • Jenny Maiorella, Phoenix Children’s Hospital
  • Lisa Malone, Phoenix Children’s Hospital
  • Kristen Palmer, Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Distinguished Nurse of the Year

  • Renee Smith, Banner Health
  • Jennifer Jones, Banner University Medical Center
  • Corinthia Huckins, Banner University Medical Center – Tucson

The Heroes in Action winners in each category will be announced at the Signature Chef’s Auction on Sunday, Nov. 10 at Talking Stick Resort. The gala is one of March of Dimes’ biggest fundraisers, and some of the Valley’s best chefs will be in attendance.
