Canton ranch has in-ground pool, party hall, 16 acres

Canton ranch has in-ground pool, party hall, 16 acres

After three years of construction, Susan Peterson Guy and her four siblings moved into their new Canton Township home with their parents, Robert and Patricia Peterson, in 1977.

She remembers the day well.

“My parents were beaming,” said Guy, who was in college at the time. “They had worked so hard and dreamed of building this home for our family.

“They were so happy it was finished and we were in awe,” she said. “We felt so blessed to have it as our home.”

But her parents have passed away and their children, who have families and homes of their own, have put the custom-built ranch-style home up for sale, she said.

Located at 50500 Hanford Road between Napier and Ridge roads in Canton Township, the nearly 3,000-square-foot house has five bedrooms, six bathrooms and 16 acres. It also has an in-ground pool and cabana, a hall for parties, and a barn with a four-car garage bay. The asking price is $2,195,000.

Mary Jo Hahn, director of sales for the Bouma Group Realtors in Ann Arbor and an agent with the company listed the property along with Martin Bouma, an agent and the firm’s principal. The Bouma Group is an affiliate of Keller Williams Realty.

Hahn said the amount of acreage on the property makes the estate a rare find in Canton. “Canton is densely populated and here’s an opportunity to own a property with a lot of land,” she said.

The agent also said the home, built by James D. Compo Inc., has been impeccably maintained and updated.

Guests to the home arrive on a circular driveway of brick pavers. Once through the main entrance and into the foyer, visitors face the living room, which has a vaulted ceiling and a back wall that boasts large windows and sliding glass doors that offer access to a sprawling deck/balcony outside and a view of the grounds.

The primary bedroom, two other bedrooms, four bathrooms, the kitchen, a dining room and a breakfast nook are all on the same floor.

The primary bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and a walk-in closet. Its ensuite bathroom features custom built-in storage, a tiled shower, a separate tub, and a dual sink vanity with a granite countertop.

Hardwood flooring, oak cabinets, and granite countertops are found under the kitchen’s vaulted ceiling. The kitchen is also partially separated from the informal dining space.

A hallway with another entrance to the home and a mudroom connects the house to the attached three-car garage.

Downstairs, there are two more bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, a laundry room, an office with a built-in U-shaped desk, cabinets and granite countertop, and a family room with a fireplace. A game room, a sauna and a tiled sunroom with a view of the pool, a second kitchen are also on the same floor.

In addition, the lower level also has a more-than-1,300-square-foot party hall with two custom-built bars, a refrigerator, and a dance floor. Guy, who is nearly 70, said the family held many memorable celebrations in the room over the years.

The lower level also provides walkout access to the pool and backyard. “The pool looks like something you’d find at a fine hotel,” Hahn said. “It would be a great venue for a wedding. It’s just amazing.”

Also on the grounds, the 4,641-square-foot barn has a four-car bay, storage and a bathroom and shower. Hahn said the barn has its own electricity meter, new overhead doors, new windows, a new electrical system, and new fixtures and finishes.

Guy said the property offered the family a sanctuary because of the creature comforts inside the home and the sprawling grounds around it. She also said the setting is her favorite thing about the property.

“Four generations of our family lived in the home: my parents, me and my siblings, some of our children, and my grandparents,” she said. “It’s where we shared all of life’s experiences in a loving environment and a beautiful, peaceful setting with an exceptional view.”

Hahn said the property is perfect for anyone looking for privacy and a serene setting near Detroit and Ann Arbor. It’s also ideal for anyone who loves to host gatherings and entertain family and friends.

The agent said the home is versatile and could be ideal for a family or multiple generations. She added the property could also be an investment opportunity and the land is splittable.

Guy said her family has made a lot of wonderful memories at the home through the years and it’s time for another family to do the same.

“It needs a new family so they can enjoy everything the home offers,” she said. “And hopefully, they can do it for generations to come.”
