Protesting farmers block busy Delhi-Chd NH and traffic is blocked

Mohali: Members of several farmer unions staged a protest and blocked the Delhi-Chandigarh highway near Derabassi for a few hours on Sunday.
The farmers were protesting against the lack of adequate supply of paddy and against the Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops in the district and state by government agencies. The farmers’ protest caused huge traffic jams on the highway.
As the police received information about the highway being blocked, the Derabassi police arrived at the protest site, pacified the farmers and evicted them from the highway. According to sources, hundreds of angry farmers had started gathering at the Delhi-Chandigarh Highway since that morning.
Due to the blocked highway, a heavy traffic snarl was observed on the road and a large police force was deployed to manage traffic.
Farmers also raised slogans against the central government for not responding to their demand to increase MSP on crops and improve procurement of paddy and other crops in the state.
According to sources, the cops managed to pacify the farmers and keep them away from the highway after negotiating with them for over an hour. However, the agitating farmers have threatened to intensify their protest in the coming days if their demands are not accepted by the government.
