American Water Detects Cybersecurity Incident and Proactively Takes Customer Portal Offline

PEORIA (25News Now) – Billing is suspended for all American Water customers after the company proactively took its customer portal service offline following a cybersecurity incident.

According to American Water, which operates in many states including Illinois, the company learned of unauthorized activity in its computer networks and systems on Oct. 3, which was later determined to be the result of a cybersecurity incident .

The company has taken its MyWater customer portal service offline as a proactive measure, in an effort to protect customer data.

This means that billing is suspended until further notice. There will be no late fees or service interruptions as long as the portal remains unavailable.

American Water said it is coordinating with law enforcement and third-party cybersecurity professionals to assist with containment, mitigation and an investigation into the nature and scope of the incident.

The company believes that no water supply or wastewater treatment facilities or operations have been negatively affected and emphasizes that the water is safe to drink.
