Might Jerod Mayo considers changing his offensive playcaller?

If the Patriots are considering a possible quarterback switch from Jacoby Brissett to rookie Drake Maye, might they also consider a change in offensive play caller?

Given Jerod Mayo didn’t dismiss the possibility of moving on from Brissett like he typically does on Monday morning, he was also asked during his media availability if he would consider changing his play caller during the season.

Alex Van Pelt, the team’s offensive coordinator, currently calls the plays. And he’s recently come under fire.

With the team having the worst-ranked offense, and struggling to score points (12.4 ppg), might Mayo think about taking the duties away from Van Pelt?

“That’s not under consideration,” Mayo answered.

By the sound of it, everything else is.

“We’re in a solution-driven business and we aren’t playing good football,” Mayo said, “so we look at every single unit and every single player and figure out how we use this roster to go out and win games. ”

The Patriots have lost four straight, and are averaging a meager 4.3 yards per offensive play. Van Pelt, who doesn’t have extensive experience as a player caller, and is more known for his work with quarterbacks and coordinating the offense, has admitted some mistakes along the way.

Most notably, he went with a passing attack right out of the gate Week 3 against the Jets, who had been struggling stopping the run. He admitted over-thinking that situation.

Against Miami in Sunday’s 15-10 loss, with the ball on the 12-yard line, with more than a minute left on the clock and three timeouts in his pocket, dialed up 4 straight passing plays. His ground game had been effective all game, but he decided to throw the ball.

The only other member of the coaching staff with experience calling plays is senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo.
