A mother claims she is too “scared” to let her children play outside amid what she says is increasing anti-social behavior in her neighborhood. The mother’s comments come as a 14-year-old student was seriously injured after being hit in the head with a bladed weapon last night (October 13).

Merseyside Police were called to the incident on Coltart Street, Toxteth, at around 6.30pm on Sunday. It was reported that the boy was walking along Lodge Lane, near the junction with Coltart Street, when he was attacked by a gang.

A 34-year-old man from Allerton and a 15-year-old man from Toxteth were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They were still in police custody to be questioned today.

Following the incident, a mother, who lives on Coltart Street, told the ECHO she was “scared” to let her children play outside due to anti-social behavior in the area. The 40-year-old mother, who did not want to be named, said: “I noticed the police were there but I don’t know anything about what happened. I realized they were here at around 7:30 pm, I only found out because my mother was here and she went home and saw that the police had blocked the road.

“I read online that a boy was attacked. It’s so sad, I have little kids too, it’s scary. But in that area, I don’t think there’s a camera, so anti-social behavior is common there. It’s scary when you have kids little ones at home.

“There are always teenagers standing there, we don’t let our children play outside because we are worried, we don’t let them go out, it’s not safe.

Another resident, Kevin, said the area was a hotbed of anti-social behavior and called the incident “stupid”. He said: “I never heard anything but I went to bed early, I was in bed by 8.30pm. I went downstairs at around 7:30 am to go to the store to pay for gas and electricity and the police told me that I could only come by later.

“He said a 14-year-old boy was attacked. He was hit in the head, he said. It’s a hotspot for anti-social behavior there, it’s not cool on your doorstep. 14 years old, they get younger, it’s stupid.”

Thomas, who has lived in the area for 40 years, added: “I haven’t heard anything. I can’t believe it was a 14 year old boy. 14 is so young. It’s not cool. I’ve lived here for 40 years, it’s good around here. I’ve never had any problems, you get the odd thing, but nothing like this.

Businesses on Lodge Lane, opposite the cordon on Coltart Street, told the ECHO how they opened this morning and saw the cordon in place. The fruit and vegetable market said: “I finished work around 7pm and the police were already here. I didn’t see anything happen because we were working inside and I only noticed when we left.”

A cordon remains in place today (Monday, October 14) as the investigation continues. CCTV and forensic investigations are being carried out in the local area by Merseyside Police. Detective Inspector Chris Carlin said: “We are continuing to investigate and establish the circumstances of what happened. It was a busy night so I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Lodge Lane and saw or heard anything about the attack to come forward and speak to us.

“I would also urge people in the area to check their CCTV footage, or if you were driving along Lodge Lane and had a dashcam, review the footage to see if it captured the incident or led up to it, no matter how small. In other words, any information can help in the investigation.”
