NCCU active shooter: Suspect in custody after North Carolina Central alarm

DURHAM, NC (WTVD) — Two unrelated shootings occurred Saturday on the campus of North Carolina Central University during homecoming weekend.

A suspect involved in one of them will appear in court on Monday.

Debra Saunders-White residence hall

At 7:43 p.m., NCCU police received reports of shots fired and an alert was sent to campus.

An investigation revealed that there were no gunshot-related injuries, but three shots were fired into the air.

This happened in the parking lot behind the Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall.

Police took Danye Negash Medhin into custody and gave an all-clear to the campus at 8:11 p.m. Medhin is charged with discharging a firearm at educational property and riot.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Monday at the Durham County Courthouse.

Eagle Campus Drive

After the first, the university began suspending operations and clearing the campus.

While inspecting the campus, officers heard more gunshots and issued a separate alert to the campus at 8:59 p.m.

Their investigation into the multiple shootings revealed that four people, including one NCCU student, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds near the Student Services Building on Eagle Campus Drive. These people were taken to a local hospital.

The campus was placed on lockdown until NCCU police gave the all-clear to the campus at 11:48 p.m.

State and local law enforcement agencies continue their investigation into both shootings.
