DETROIT LAKES

– Robin Lynn Johnson, 37, of rural Lake Park, has reached an agreement with the Becker County Prosecutor’s Office to suspend prosecution on two felony counts of animal abandonment.

Johnson was originally charged in Becker County District Court with misdemeanor cruelty to animals and two misdemeanor counts of animal abandonment. The misdemeanor charge was dismissed by the prosecutor’s office on October 25, 2023

According to court records, on Nov. 10, 2022, Lake Park police received a report of a cat left behind during an eviction from a Lake Park home.

On November 14, 2022, the officer spoke with the property owner, who stated that he had captured a cat in a live trap left at the rental property. The property owner said Johnson was evicted from the property on November 8, 2022, and told the property owner at the time that the cat was now his problem.

The officer attempted to call and locate Johnson, but he did not answer any calls. The cat was seized and taken to the Marshmallow Foundation in Detroit Lakes.

Law enforcement officers subsequently discovered that Johnson had also left a freshwater aquarium with fish in the rental property. On November 20, 2022, a Lake Park police officer assisted the Marshmallow Foundation in seizing approximately a dozen freshwater fish from the property. Two of the fish in the tank had died before the seizure.

On Oct. 3, Johnson signed an agreement with the county attorney’s office to suspend prosecution for one year on two animal abandonment crimes. Johnson agreed to pay $1,413 in restitution, a $100 fine and agreed not to commit similar or similar violations within that year.

Detroit Lake woman convicted of fentanyl pills

Krystal Colleen Koehnen, 35, of Detroit Lakes, was convicted in Becker County District Court of a fifth-degree felony drug charge.

According to court records, on May 10, 2023, a Becker County sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle on County Highway 25 without a working license plate. The driver was later arrested for DWI. The passenger, Koehnen, was arrested on an active warrant. During a search of the vehicle, specifically a pink bag on Koehnen’s side floor, the deputy found glass pipes commonly used to smoke drugs. A digital scale was also found in her bag and 48 fentanyl pills were found in a black bag behind where she had been sitting. Koehnen made a statement to police in which he admitted that the pills were in the vehicle.

On October 2, District Judge Gretchen Thilmony issued a stay of imposition, with successful completion of probation resulting in a misdemeanor conviction.

Koehnen was ordered to serve 36 days in jail, with credit for 36 days served, and was fined $500 plus $150 in court costs.

She must not drink or use drugs, must undergo a comprehensive assessment and follow recommendations, and must successfully complete the county’s Drug Court program.

She was placed on five years of supervised probation.
