Newly graduated state trooper faces charges after Tewksbury crash

A man who recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy is charged with driving while intoxicated after allegedly crashing into another car in Tewksbury, WBZ, Sunday evening. reports.

James Doran, 27, is charged with operating while intoxicated and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to court records. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tewksbury Police responded to the crash on Main Street near Clark Road on Sunday evening around 11 p.m. according to WBZ. Police said the car Doran was riding in crashed into the back of another vehicle, and responding officers reported that the 27-year-old and another man in his car were both unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

Court documents show Doran’s passenger initially claimed he was driving, but officers found the man’s phone on the passenger floor, according to WBZ. The damage to the passenger side windshield is also believed to be consistent with a cut to the man’s head.

Doran later reportedly told police he was driving and had “a few drinks.” According to WBZ, he allegedly refused a breath test and a sobriety test.

Doran graduated from the police academy on October 9 and worked out of the Leominster barracks. according to the station. He was in the same class as Enrique Delgado-Garciawho died on September 13 after becoming unresponsive during a training exercise.

New state troopers are on a one-year probationary period with the department after graduating from the academy, WBZ reports.

Doran was arraigned Monday, according to court records. He was ordered to surrender his driver’s license and will appear in court again in early December.
