One person is injured Monday after an officer-involved shooting in St. Paul.

St. Paul officers were called to the intersection of Snelling and University Avenue West for a report of shots fired around 7:45 p.m. There, police found a man armed with a gun near Snelling and Charles avenues.

St. Paul police say the man with the gun pointed it at his own head, and police then began negotiating with him. After refusing, the man began walking south on Snelling, according to police, and officers continued to talk and follow him.

The man did not put down the gun or surrender and continued walking south until he reached the intersection of University and Snelling Avenues, where he walked around.

That’s where police say they used less-lethal projectiles to get him to put the gun down, and the man pointed his gun at officers, causing them to fire their weapons, hitting him.

Afterwards, police said they gave the man medical attention for what are believed to be life-threatening injuries. He was then taken to Regions Hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

Officials say no officers were injured in the shooting.

A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS photographer at the scene captured footage from the scene and officers from St. Paul, Metro Transit and Roseville on the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. According to the St. Paul Police Department, all officers involved are being placed on administrative leave.

Route 21 was diverted overnight from Snelling Avenue between Shields Avenue and University Avenue and from University Avenue between Snelling Avenue and Simpson Street, according to a post on X from Metro Transit. However, the Minnesota BCA said shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday that the intersection of Snelling and University Avenue had reopened.

Further details about the shooting are not known at this time.
