How to open the Brookhaven Hospital reception lock in Silent Hill 2 Remake

You can find your first tip in the reception lock code behind reception. There is a note pinned to a cork board that says the following:

“Due to repeated cases of keys being lost, from now on, they must be returned to the locker at the end of each shift. All employees are required to memorize the padlock combination and must not reveal it to anyone except authorized personnel under any circumstances. In case of any problems, please inform the head nurse in Exam Room 3.“

You can find Examination Room 3 along the eastern hallway of the 1st floor of the hospital, to the left of the stairs leading to the basement. Exam Room 3 is locked, so go to the next door, Exam Room 2, and break the window to enter the room. Once in the Exam Rooms, go to the small room between Exam Rooms 2 and 3 to find a table. Inside the drawer is a note that contains a message that changes depending on the difficulty of the puzzle.

Each of the notes contains a riddle that you will need to solve. How challenging each of these puzzles correlates with the puzzle’s difficulty setting, but they all revolve around specific images found in the hospital lobby. There are photos of the 7 nurses, 2 doctors and the front of Brookhaven Hospital with 4 trees in front. Here is a complete breakdown of the padlock code for each puzzle difficulty:

Light difficulty: “The key cabinet combination is: 2, 8, The total number of nurses in the lobby photo.”
Standard Difficulty: “I wrote to you in a way that you should finally be able to remember. Once you’re in the lobby, just look around. Now remember: Nurses. Doctors. Trees.”
Difficulty Hard “If the second was as high as the number of nurses, there would still be one left. With two of them dead and one just a fraud. The third would cut the firewood in half. The first was singular.”
- The number of nurses (7), but one less. 7 + 1 = 8. Remove dead and cheats (3). 8 – 3 = 5. The number of trees (4) is cut in half for firewood. 4/2 = 2. “Singular” means 1.

Now you can go to the reception office. Interact with the safe near the corner of the room and enter the code for your puzzle difficulty and the lock will open. You can now get the Basement Key and go deeper into Brookhaven Hospital.
