Huntsville police officers are under investigation over allegations of misconduct

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAF) – A Huntsville City Attorney has confirmed the names of the two Huntsville police officers involved in an ongoing investigation.

WAFF 48 News broke this story in August after filing several Freedom of Information Act requests.

Huntsville City Attorney Eddie Blair confirmed via email that former Sergeant Julian Johnson and Sergeant Jefford Wright are currently part of an ongoing investigation and pending criminal cases.

Multiple sources told 48 News that Johnson and Wright are in the middle of this investigation, which focuses on one case involving several incidents.

Johnson has been with HPD for decades, while Wright has been with the department for more than a decade.

In August, WAFF 48 reported that the allegations focused on an inappropriate relationship with a suspect who has a bond.

The matter was reported to Internal Affairs, but a Huntsville attorney says the attorney general’s office was called when nothing was done.

WAFF 48 has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the officers’ personnel files. Almost a month later we received the documents. However, Wright’s data for his 2022 and 2023 staff evaluations was not included.

Wright is a senior officer working for the Internal Affairs Department. Home Affairs is charged with investigating the conduct of its officials.

We then filed another public records request, providing information about both officers’ internal affairs files.

In the email to 48 News, City Attorney Eddie Blair confirmed that these were indeed the officers under investigation, but he could not release Internal Affairs files to us due to the ongoing investigation.

Wright’s status with HPD is unclear.

We confirmed that Johnson recently retired from HPD.

The district attorney confirmed that his office had reviewed Johnson’s cases to see how viable they were if Johnson was unavailable during the prosecution phase.
