Eligibility criteria for the scholarship include at least one research article accepted or published as first author in a reputable journal or conference proceedings, directly arising from your doctoral research.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has launched the Scholarship for Academic and Research Excellence (FARE), a new initiative to support PhD students with their academic and research capabilities. This scholarship aims to encourage timely completion of doctoral studies while promoting high-quality research outputs, IIT said.

The application process is now open to full-time PhD students currently enrolled at IIT Kanpur who have submitted their thesis within five years of enrolling in the PhD program. Students who submit their thesis within five years and six months are also eligible, although the duration of the scholarship will be adjusted accordingly, the institute said.

Eligibility criteria for the scholarship include at least one research article accepted or published as first author in a reputed journal or conference proceedings, arising directly from your doctoral research, the institute said in a press release. The scholarship applies to students from the 2018 academic year batch onwards.

The scholarship will offer financial support for up to 12 months, with a scholarship equivalent to that of the institute’s postdoctoral fellows, as well as additional scholarships related to research. The current Thesis Supervisor will continue to serve as Mentor, although collaboration with other faculty members during the fellowship period is strongly encouraged.

“The FARE scholarship is a significant step by IIT Kanpur to support its students in achieving their academic and research goals by offering recognition and tangible support to those who excel academically and contribute significantly to their fields of study. IIT Kanpur invites eligible PhD students to apply and advance their research careers through this opportunity,” the institute said.

Meanwhile, student placements at IIT Kanpur saw an overall drop of 12 percent in the 2023-24 academic session, with a huge drop in international offers, compared to last year. Although the number of Pre-Placement Offers (PPO) received by students increased this year, overall placements, including on some master’s courses, remained low. According to statistics from a report released by IIT on May 31, the overall placement rate this year was 76 percent, the same standing at 87.9 percent for the 2022-23 academic session.
