Wabash County woman ‘disappears’ from voter registration database after 20 years

WABASH COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – The vote has been going on for weeks, but for Wabash resident Mary Roy, the ballot box has left her feeling out.

She says when she went to vote, election officials couldn’t find her in the database.

“It’s very frustrating, and I’m voting because I want my vote to count,” Mary Roy said. “It’s my right.”

In early October, she says she went to vote at the Wabash County Courthouse. At the time, she said election officials could find no paper or electronic database records showing she had ever voted in Wabash County.

Roy says she has lived and voted in every election in Wabash County since the early 2000s.

“I disappeared (from the database) and that worries me because a lot of other people disappeared,” Roy said. “I didn’t know and couldn’t vote.”

21Investigation then contacted the Wabash County Clerk’s Office to get answers for Roy.

The office confirmed they could not prove Roy had ever voted in Wabash County. They say they discovered she was registered to vote under her maiden name in Grant County, but that was canceled in the early 2000s, when they say she last voted.

Roy says this has left her with many questions and the fear that her votes haven’t counted for the past 20 years.

“I trust the voting system,” Roy said. “I never thought there was election theft, fraud or anything like that. Nowadays I might think that, but I don’t.

After our first call to the clerk’s office, they were able to find Roy’s registration.

They said an error caused her to be paired with someone else, but now Roy can cast her vote as planned.
