Documentary about human trafficking is shown at SCC, Bettendorf

A documentary showing at Scott Community College examines human trafficking in Iowa.

“Gridshock: A Film About Sex Trafficking in Iowa” will be shown Saturday, November 9 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Scott Community College Welcome Center, Student Life Center, Room 2300, 500 Belmont Road, Bettendorf. Parking is available in Lot D on the main campus.

The screening is sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the North Central Iowa Coalition Against Human Trafficking, highlighting a collaborative effort to combat this critical problem. For more information, visit here.

The film is intended for people aged 16 and over and aims to raise awareness about human trafficking. After the screening the audience can ask questions.

Melody Stone, human trafficking expert who will host “Gridshock,” discussed the powerful documentary with Our Quad Cities News.

She said the film will help people identify human trafficking, learn to recognize signs and understand the reality surrounding the crime; understand the crisis of why human trafficking is considered the fastest growing crime worldwide; how to separate fact from fiction with evidence-based information; understand how to protect yourself and others against extortion and other forms of human trafficking; and explore ways to create a safe, more informed community.

“While many people think this is only a problem in other countries or big cities, that is not the case,” says filmmaker Vanessa McNeal, herself a survivor of sexual assault. “These atrocities happen every day in our own backyards.”
