Body found in Pennsylvania home of man filmed trying to shoot pastor during Sunday service

Police in western Pennsylvania said they found the body of a man at the home of another man who was filmed trying to shoot a pastor during a church service Sunday.

Pennsylvania State Police in Pittsburgh said Sunday they charged Bernard Polite, a 26-year-old Braddock resident, with attempted murder after he interrupted a sermon at Jesus Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock shortly after 13 hours and pointed a gun at Reverend Glenn Germany and pulled the trigger.

Fortunately, the gun did not fire and Polite was approached by church deacon Clarence McCallister, who was operating the cameras for a Facebook Live video that captured the entire episode, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune- Review.

The video shows McCallister jumping over a railing and tackling Polite. McCallister then disarms Polite and Germany restrains him.

“God, by some miracle, stopped the shooting,” Germany said in a later Facebook video.

Germany told the Trib that McCallister was “selfless and not afraid to jump on a guy he saw with a gun.” I’m just happy and grateful. It was truly a miracle.

Later Sunday, KDKA-TV reported that the body of Derek Polite, 56, was found by Eastern Mon Valley Regional Police in the home where Bernard Polite lived. The station said Derek Polite was shot.

In this Facebook video Sunday evening, Germany said a neighbor of Bernard Polite told him that Derek and Bernard Polite were cousins.

In addition to attempted homicide, Bernard Polite is also accused of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering others. He was denied bail and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Polite has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 13.
