Adams and Gerken pace Knights at Hawkeye 10 meet |  Sports

When it comes to the Hawkeye 10 Conference, it’s often a loaded field of talented student-athletes. While they may not stand out in the team standings, Kuemper Catholic track and field teams have some quality individuals.

The Knights had two champions at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field Championships, held May 2 at Ray Graves Track at Mustang Field. Senior Evan Adams won the discus with a throw of 154 feet, nine inches, while teammate Ben Gerken won the high jump with a clearance of six feet, three inches. Gerken also earned a second-place finish in the long jump, clearing a distance of 20 and a half feet.

Senior Ellie Sibbel led the Kuemper girls with two third-place finishes in the shot put (36 feet, seven and a half inches) and discus throw (99 feet, one inch).

Overall, Kuemper’s boys took eighth place with 43 points, while Knight’s girls settled for ninth place with 36 points. Glenwood won both sides of the competition, with 148.5 (boys) and 175 points (girls).

On Thursday at 4 p.m., the red and gold will try to punch their tickets to the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships by competing in the District 8 Class 2A state qualifying meet on the campus of Treynor Community School. The Knights will see ASHTW, Clarinda, Missouri Valley, MVAOCOU, OABCIG, Red Oak, Shenandoah, host Treynor, Underwood and Van Meter.

Here are some high-end finishes in red and gold.

Senior Jacob Greving was another top individual for the Knight boys, finishing sixth in both the 1,600 meters (4:38.42) and the 3,200 meters (10:06.94). The men’s 4×800 meter relay team of Greving, sophomore Thomas Pottebaum, junior Ryan Sundrup and freshman Wyatt Wunschel took fifth place with a time of 8:46.86 .

The men’s 4×100 meter team of senior DJ Vonnahme, sophomore Sean Healy, freshman Griffin Glynn and Gerken took seventh place (46.67 seconds), while Vonnahme finished eighth in the 100 meters (11.45 seconds). Glynn finished seventh in the high jump (five feet eight inches).

Freshman Morgan Masching was one of the top individuals for the Kuemper girls, finishing fifth in the 100 meters (13.40 seconds) and long jump (15 feet, four and three-quarter inches). Sophomore Elsa Tiefenthaler finished fifth in the high jump (four feet, 10 inches), while the team of Kerrigan Irlbeck, Chloe Gehling, Tiefenthaler and Masching finished fifth in the 4×100-meter relay (54.28 ) and the 4×200 meter relay. (1:57.21).

Sophomore Charlotte Hackfort finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:38.26).
