Mustangs bats fall silent against Crimson Pride

CENTRAL CITY – A strong pitching performance from Reece Petersen closed the door for Raymond Central in a 7-1 loss to Omaha Roncalli Catholic in the District C-3 baseball tournament at Kernel Field in Central City on May 2.

Petersen went all seven innings on the mound for the Crimson Pride and allowed five hits and one earned run. He also struck out five Mustang batters.

Right off the bat, Roncalli scored the first run of the game on a single by Caden Shafer in the bottom of the first. The Crimson Pride added two more points in the second to make it 3-0.

Raymond Central responded with its only run of the contest in the top of the third.

With one out, Kyle Peterson and Hunter Sykes both had a pair of singles to right and left field. A groundout by Owen Kreikemeier to shortstop drove in Peterson and brought the Mustangs within two runs.

Right away, Roncalli answered Raymond Central’s run with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. They also scored an extra point in the bottom of the fourth, making it a six-point game.

The Mustangs’ last good scoring chance came in the top of the fifth. With one out, Raymond Central loaded the bases when Sykes singled to shortstop.

Kreikemeier then hit a double play on a hard hit to shortstop.

Kreikemeier scored a point in the Mustangs’ loss. Peterson and Sykes had two hits each, while Tate Roubal had one.

Sykes started the game and pitched three innings, allowed six earned runs and had three strikeouts. In relief, Tucker Matulka went three innings on the mound, allowed one earned run and struck out three batters.

With the loss to the Crimson Pride in district play, Raymond Central’s season ended with an 8-10 record. Seniors on this year’s team included Ben Kliment, Roubal, Jacob Schultz, Owen Sabatka and Peterson.
